Executive Summary

Sure2GRiP will develop an automated system for the inspection of composite pipes and pipe joints manufactured from Glass Reinforced Polymer/Epoxy (GRP/E). This project will further improve and optimise the defect detection and sizing, integration of the system for complete automated inspection to significantly reduce the maintenance downtime and the level of rework and increase the accuracy.

Strategic Objectives:

  • To address existing difficulties encountered in GRP pipes and pipe joints inspection by developing four Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) inspection systems.
  • Combine the developed inspection system with GRP pipes and pipe joints to create new innovative inline inspection methodology, which will provide complete quality control of GRP pipes manufacturing process.
Impact:
  • Faster inspections hence reduce maintenance downtime using automating NDT techniques.
  • Increase the accuracy, by eliminating operator subjectivity and increase safety and reduce failure.
  • Detection of defects at an early stage in the production process so that there is faster feedback to the fabrication process and hence reduction in the level of rework.

Sure2GRiP is a collaboration between the following organisations: TWI Ltd, NDT Solutions Ltd, LOT Oriel GmbH, Laser Optical Engineering (LOE) Ltd, Advanced Technology Group (ATG), AJAT, Petrobras, Ameron International, RWE npower, Technical University Sofia (TUS), University Polytechnica of Bucharest (UPB), Zenon. The project is co-ordinated and managed by TWI Ltd and is partly funded by the EC under the CRAFT programme ref: COOP-CT-2004-513226.
